Caterpillar announced a successful collaboration with Microsoft and Ballard Power systems demonstrating the viability of using large scale hydrogen fuel cells as backup power for data centers. The demonstration was conducted in a challenging environment: 6,086ft above sea level in below-freezing conditions which validated the hydrogen fuel cell power systems performance. The project was supported and partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (under the H2@Scale Initiative).
