Partners
Avista
Avista offers scholarships at select colleges and universities across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Scholarships are available in the following areas:
- Electrical Engineering Scholarships
- Management Information Systems Scholarships
- Avista Scholars Service Territory Scholarships
- Avista 4-H Scholars
- Avista Waters of the West Scholarships
All scholarship applications must be made through the respective college or university.
Benton Rural Electric Association
Benton REA awards up to eight scholarships for qualifying members or their children whose main residence is within Benton, Lewis, or Yakima counties and are graduating high school seniors. To ensure a wide range of students have access to these scholarships, Benton REA offers three scholarship programs:
- Academic Scholarships
- Line School Scholarship
- Trade & Technical Scholarship
Scholarship applications open in November for the following year.
Big Bend Electric Cooperative
Big Bend Electric Cooperative (BBEC) awards five separate scholarships each year to graduating high school seniors who are enrolled, or planning to enroll, in an accredited educational or training institution. All candidates must be members or have parents that are members at the time of application. The application period is open annually from September to the beginning of January.
Columbia Rural Electric Association
Columbia Rural Electric Association (Columbia REA) awards three academic and two lineworker scholarships through two memorial programs for students living within their service area.
- Clark A. Brewington Scholarship Program
- Academic scholarships, renewable for four consecutive academic years
- Jeff Meredith Scholarship Program
- Assists with continuing education opportunities for qualifying persons enrolled or will be enrolled in a recognized Electrical Lineworker Program
Inland Power & Light
The application closes in April, with awards chosen/notified in May-June.
Orcas Power & Light
Orcas Power & Light (OPALCO) offers a unique opportunity for sophomores and juniors of OPALCO member households to apply for a scholarship that includes representing the community at the ICUA Youth Rally summer camp at The College of Idaho in Caldwell, ID. All travel, lodging, and food expenses for the event are paid for by OPALCO and students even have a chance to win an additional $1,100 in scholarship money.
Applications are due to OPALCO in April.
Tanner Electric Cooperative
Tanner Electric Cooperative awards three academic scholarships each year to graduating seniors who are full-time dependents of cooperative members, choosing one student from each of their three service areas. Tanner Electric Cooperative also offers the Allen Billett Memorial Lineworker Scholarship for students entering an accredited lineworker training program and intending to become an apprentice in Washington State.
Applications must be received by April 1st each year.
TransAlta
TransAlta is committed to investing in their communities through meaningful contributions and enhancing quality of life. The TransAlta Women in Trades Scholarship is one way to do just that. The program assists women in obtaining an education in trades by showcasing and rewarding successful femail role models.
Applications are open until the end of June, and recipients will be announced in August.
Washington Organizations
American Public Works Association
The American Public Works Association, Washington State Chapter (APWA) offers two scholarships for students majoring in a field related to Public Works (such as engineering, surveying, GIS, mechanics, and operations) through the Jack Pittis Memorial Scholarship Program.
- Higher Education Scholarship: for 2-year degree programs
- Jack Pittis Memorial Scholarship: for juniors and seniors of 4-year degree programs
Applications are due in June each year.
Community Foundation of North Central Washington
The Community Foundation of North Central Washington is a philanthropic organization that helps individuals, families, businesses, and agencies support charitable causes throughout Chelan, Douglas, and Okanogan counties. They have a list of available scholarships in the area that includes:
- Andrew York Memorial Scholarship- established by Chelan County PUD
- Cakes for College Scholarship- available for high school seniors from Cashmere, Eastmont, River Academy, Wenatchee, or West Side
- Don and Rita Campbell Scholarship- available for non-traditional students returning to school in WA state

Washington State Opportunity Scholarship
The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship offers scholarships for three pathways, helping to launch low- and middle-income students into careers for high-demand jobs. The two listed below relate to the clean energy industry.
- Baccalaureate Scholarship
- Applications are open January-February.
- Career and Technical Scholarship
- Applications are open twice a year: September-October and April-June.

Washington Women in Need
Washington Women in Need (WWIN) aims to help women facing barriers to opportunity succeed in college and careers so that they and their families can thrive. They provide renewable scholarships, career coaching, and a supportive community that champions women’s success. They also have a list of resources that includes but is not limited to: more scholarships, employment & career information, and mental health.Applications are open January-April.

Build Your Future is dedicated to the construction trades and recruiting the next generation of craft professionals. Get Into Energy
Get Into Energy was created by the Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD) to build awareness among students, teachers, military veterans, career changers, and others about the opportunities available in the energy industry. The site offers an overview of types of careers in energy, trades information, education for both students and parents, and a list of scholarships, including:
- The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

- Society of Women Engineers
Hydropower Foundation
- Mike Sale Memorial Scholarship
- Promotes graduate-level research in specific areas
- Julie A. Keil Women in Hydro Scholarship
- Program for women majoring in a discipline relevant to entering the hydropower industry- scholarship application deadline is May 31st
National Hydropower Association
Application opens each year January-February.
Renewable Energy Scholarship Foundation
The Renewable Energy Scholarship Foundation awards scholarships to students in Washington and Oregon who are committed to renewable energy. Study areas may include biomass, geothermal, wind, solar, and public policy. The Foundation expects to award 15 scholarships in 2024 based on academic merit, accomplishments, and demonstrated interest. Applications are due in February.
Scholarship America
Scholarship America is the nation’s largest nonprofit, private scholarship organization. In 2022 they distributed $303+ million to 100,000 students. They distribute scholarships and emergency grants, which can help cover costs related to life emergencies such as a car repair or child-care issue. Each scholarship has its own requirements and deadlines so be sure to check them all out.
