What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a required training program consisting of a combination of on-the-job training and related classroom instruction under the supervision of a journey-level professional. Once completed, the apprentice becomes a nationally recognized journeyman.

Apprenticeship standards

Registered apprenticeship program standards in Washington state are regulated by the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council (WSATC). A sponsor/employer operates an apprenticeship program and follows recommended guidelines. There are also federally registered apprenticeship programs who report to the U.S. Department of Labor and follow the standards assigned.

Benefits of an apprenticeship vs. college

There are a wide variety of apprenticeships available, and similar to college, an apprenticeship can take years to complete. One of the benefits of apprenticeship is you earn while you learn, and many apprentices enjoy raises along the path to becoming a journey-level worker. (pc: Dennis Schroeder, NREL 122267)

The sponsors listed below may or may not have openings currently, please refer to the job opportunities/employment areas of the websites linked below to see what is available. Sponsors frequently fill apprenticeship positions from within the company, so be on the lookout for entry-level positions as well, including:

  • Flagger
  • Ground crew member
  • Meter Reader
  • Electrical Helper

Many apprenticeships require additional certifications which may be offered at local community and technical colleges:

  • CDL
  • Flagger Certification
  • First Aid/CPR and AED
  • OSHA Safety Training

There are also pre-apprenticeship programs that offer a good introduction to apprenticeship and the work that’s expected. Here’s a list from the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries.
