Last month, Microsoft announced a partnership with Constellation in Pennsylvania to restart Unit 1 at Three Mile Island, with Microsoft purchasing electricity generated by the plant to offset power demand from its data centers in the region. The restart is expected to come online in 2028, creating 3,400 direct and indirect jobs.
Amazon has announced agreements to preserve existing and support the development of new Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
- In Washington, Energy Northwest will construct, own, and operate the Xe-100 reactors, developed by X-energy and expected to generate 320 megawatts in the first phase of the project. The projects will help meet the regions forecasted energy needs in the early 2030s and is expected to support as many as 100 permanent jobs.
- In Virginia, Dominion Energy will explore the development of an SMR project near the existing nuclear power station, bringing an estimated 300 megawatts of power to the region. Dominion projects that power demands in the area will increase by 85% over the next 15 years.
- In Pennsylvania, Amazon has a previously signed agreement to co-locate a data center facility next to Talen Energy‘s nuclear facility, helping to preserve the existing reactor and 900 local jobs at the facility.
Google has also signed an agreement to purchase nuclear energy from SMRs developed by California-based Kairos Power. The initial phase of work is expected to bring the first SMR online by 2030, followed by additional reactor deployments through 2035. Generation is expected to be 500 megawatts.
