The University of Washington Clean Energy Institute (UW CEI) is planning an expansion of the Clean Energy Testbeds, an open-access climate tech facility, that will enable fabrication of pouch cells to accelerate the next generation of faster-charging, high-energy-density, and earth-friendly batteries. The pouch cells are a versatile battery format that can be used for electric transportation and more, using more abundant materials and enabling faster charging.
CEI shared lab details at an event with Washington Governor Jay Inslee, climate tech leaders, and clean energy researchers. The new lab will include a dry room with tools to make the batteries and an ambient room to house battery cyclers and other equipment. Along with hosting an intensive hands-on course for UW’s Graduate Certificate in Battery Engineering, the Testbeds will also host workshops starting in 2025 for students from two-year colleges around the state, including Big Bend Community College.
