National Hydropower Association, Outstanding Stewards of America's Waters Award logo

The National Hydropower Association, host of the Clean Currents Conference, recognizes organizations as Outstanding Stewards of America’s Waters each year. The recognition program, commonly referred to as OSAW, is a wonderful way to highlight the great work organizations are doing to educate the public, enhance recreation, improve the environment, and preserve history.

The Center of Excellence was proud to support our partners at Clean Currents this year who received recognition in the Public Education category:

In 2023, FWEE received support from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to scale-up the STEM Academy’s efforts and develop a case study for hydropower generators nationally to adopt the program, which provides students with hands-on learning activities grounded in STEM and greater exposure to both water power and future careers in the field.

The Salmon Summit is a two-day event targeted at students, featuring more than 50 field stations in Washington State. PNNL’s fish passage experts tag fish and explain how data collection about migrating salmon helps researchers understand more about fish populations and their passage through hydropower projects. The event is also an opportunity to help promote STEM opportunities and future careers in water power.
