General Fusion, based in British Columbia and launched in 2002, is one of the oldest commercial ventures for fusion energy. The company recently announced nearly $15 million in new funding, coming from Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and Business Development Bank of Canada for the Lawson Machine 26 (LM26) program. The program is the development of a larger scale demonstration device and will be advancing to the next stage- compressing plasmas at large scale. The LM26 is designed to achieve two transformational milestones for fusion energy: temperatures of over 100 million degrees Celsius and scientific breakeven equivalent.
