
Late last week, President Donald Trump signed several executive orders intended to increase domestic production of nuclear power within the next 25 years. The orders come as demand for electricity surges amid a boom in energy-hungry data centers and AI. Tech companies, venture capitalists, states and others are competing for electricity and straining the nation’s electric grid. The signed orders include:
- Deploying Advanced Nuclear Reactor Technologies for National Security
- Ordering the Reform of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission
- Reforming Nuclear Reactor Testing at the Department of Energy
- Reinvigorating the Nuclear Industrial Base
The orders will allow for reactor design testing at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Labs, allow for construction on federal lands to protect national and economic security, and remove regulatory barriers by requiring the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to issue timely licensing decisions.
“For too long, America’s nuclear energy industry has been stymied by red tape and outdated government policies, but thanks to President Trump, the American nuclear renaissance is finally here,” Energy Secretary Chris Wright said.
