What do they do?

Energy trader’s buy/sell shares of energy or energy commodities (electricity, oil, or gas) in the power markets. Energy traders use computer software to predict energy prices, monitor prices, and market conditions.


Energy Traders typically have bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field with coursework typically including substantial math and finance material. Employers will typically provide thorough on the job training on job specifics.

Career Path

Energy Traders will find an MBA useful for advancement to higher level positions within the securities industry.


Energy Traders are employed by utility companies and Independent Energy Trading Companies. Typical starting salaries in this field range from $100-150k.
