Heimdall Power, headquartered in Norway, and Puget Sound Energy, the largest utility in Washington state, are partnering on a groundbreaking project. The companies announced last week the partnership to install the largest deployment of dynamic line rating (DLR) sensors in the United States.

Heimdall will be installing 75 advanced monitoring devices, known as Neurons, across 100 miles of transmission lines in five counties in Washington. The devices will be installed mostly by Heimdall’s proprietary autonomous drone system. The Neurons will provide real-time data to PSE about conditions on the transmission line and enable more efficient, reliable power delivery.

“This technology gives us much more insight into all the factors that influence how much power can flow on our lines,” said Michelle Vargo, PSE’s Senior Vice President of Energy Operations. “It provides more flexibility in how we manage system load and more strategically select future investments.”

The pilot will run through summer 2026, after which PSE will analyze the collected information to determine how to implement dynamic line ratings using Neuron data on live transmission lines through the utility’s network.
