Argonne National Laboratory, in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), recently launched a beta version of their Hydropower Market Game, an interactive educational tool designed to highlight the complexities of hydropower operations and markets. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO), the development team is seeking beta testers from across the hydropower community to provide feedback on the tool’s usability, accuracy, and ability to communicate key industry concepts.
The game challenges players to operate hydropower plants, balance water management needs, and respond to grid conditions in a dynamic market environment. By simulating real-world operational decisions, the project team hopes to showcase hydropower’s critical role in providing renewable energy and grid reliability.
“This interactive game lets players explore how hydropower works, make operational decisions, and manage water,” said Quentin Ploussard, PhD, researcher at Argonne National Laboratory. “It’s designed as both an educational tool and a fun way to engage with real-world energy challenges.”
